Marc-André ter Stegen has just become the new number one at the DFB. But now he will probably be out for a longer period. During the FC Barcelona match he had to be substituted while crying.

Concern for Marc-André ter Stegen: The German national goalkeeper suffered a possibly serious injury to his right knee in FC Barcelona’s league match against FC Villarreal. The 32-year-old was stretchered off the pitch shortly before half-time with the score at 2-1 for Barça and replaced by his deputy Iñaki Peña. An official diagnosis was pending.

However, according to the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”, initial scans indicate that the injury could be a tear in the patellar tendon. This would probably mean the end of the season for ter Stegen, with talk of an eight-month break.

Ter Stegen apparently injured himself when he landed after intercepting a cross. A corner had hit the far post in the penalty area. Ter Stegen had to stretch a lot as he flew backwards to get his hands on the ball, which he eventually managed. With the ball in his hands, the 32-year-old landed roughly on his back and right leg and immediately began to scream in pain. The players standing around immediately called for medical help.

Ter Stegen was lying on the ground holding his knee. He was eventually carried off the pitch on a stretcher with his hands in front of his face.

According to Spanish media reports, ter Stegen went straight to the hospital. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said after the game on DAZN: “We have to wait. It will be a serious injury. You could see that immediately when he was lying on the field.”

Only at the end of August, the 42-time national player became the German number one following the retirement of Manuel Neuer.
