The German women’s national team will soon start its Olympic football tournament. However, they will still have to do without their captain in the final test.
The wait is not over yet: The DFB women will once again have to do without DFB captain Alexandra Popp and defensive leader Marina Hegering in their Olympic dress rehearsal on Tuesday evening in Hanover against Austria (7 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). The chances of playing are “zero at the moment,” said national coach Horst Hrubesch at the final press conference on Monday.
Hegering continues to suffer from calf problems, and Popp did not travel to Iceland because of foot irritation. “We have prepared everything so that we can take her to the Olympics, so that we can get her in top shape,” said Hrubesch. Both players will still be on the bench in the last European Championship qualifier.
Midfielder Sydney Lohmann is also not ready to play yet. The 24-year-old is completing her rehabilitation after muscular problems at her club Bayern Munich. The injury should be “sorted” by the end of the current week. At least Lena Oberdorf is returning after serving a yellow card suspension. She has learned: “I have to concentrate with the yellow cards. I don’t like watching,” said Oberdorf.
In ten days, the DFB women will play their opening match against Australia (July 25th, from 7 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online) in Marseille. In the port city, they will then play against the USA (July 28th, from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). After that, the DFB team will travel to Saint-Étienne for the last group match against Zambia (July 31st, from 7 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).
