Dhaka City College, a traditional educational institution, had to announce a holiday due to the violent protests over the five-point demand, including the resignation of the principal and vice-principal.

On Monday (October 28) at 12 noon, students blocked Dhanmondi Road No. 2 in front of City College. They kept chanting slogans of ‘Bhua Bhua’ to the principal and vice-principal.

Samiha Noor Athai, a second year student of science department, told risingbd.com, ‘Our current principal and vice-principal have been doing various irregularities ever since they took office. There are allegations against them of charging extra fees.

“If any student goes to ask about these things, they misbehave,” said Athai.

Saikat Hasan, a student of Dhaka City College’s humanities department, told RisingBD.com, ‘A popular teacher in the computer science department is Associate Professor Md. Jahangir Alam Suman sir has been suspended for three months for making false allegations without any reason. It is unfair. So we are demanding the resignation of the principal-vice-principal.

Shahriar Mahir, a student of the 25th batch of the science department of this college, said, “Since the college does not have a governing body, the college administration will investigate the accused teacher and take appropriate action.”

More students were being talked to during the protest. The five-point demand was learned from them.

The demands are- Suspended teacher Suman should be returned to the institution with dignity by today, the principal and vice-principal who illegally occupied the chair should be resigned, legitimate principal Bedar Uddin should be reinstated by today (Monday), stop the vindictive dirty politics of teachers in the name of college reforms, stop harassment of parents. And stop extorting money from students on the pretext of results and stop extra classes like business coaching centers.

At 5:30 in the afternoon, the students stopped the protest and left after the intervention of the army. Police members of New Market police station were present at that time.
