Both Dhaka-Beijing sides reiterated their commitment to mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, mutual understanding and support on each other’s core interests, major concerns. China does not support interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh. At the same time, Bangladesh reiterated its firm commitment to its stand on the ‘One-China’ policy.

This was stated in the Dhaka-Beijing joint declaration after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to China.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Beijing on July 8-10 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. After the visit, Dhaka-Beijing issued a 27-point joint declaration.

According to the joint declaration, the Chinese side firmly supports Bangladesh in achieving the development goals planned under Vision-2041 to maintain peace and stability, non-interference in internal affairs and independently choosing a development path suitable to its national situation.

Both sides emphasized that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 is unquestionable and unchallenged. Bangladesh reiterated its firm commitment to the One-China policy and its position that the Chinese government represents the whole of China and that Taiwan is part of China. Bangladesh supports China in matters related to China’s efforts to safeguard China’s core interests, national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the joint declaration, the two sides agreed to deepen strategic mutual trust through visits, exchanges of letters and meetings at multilateral events to enhance strategic communication. Both sides agreed to close communication and cooperation at government and people level. Both sides expressed satisfaction with communication between political parties, especially ruling parties, to exchange views on issues of mutual interest.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a meeting with President Xi Jinping during her visit to China. During the visit, 21 MoUs were signed between the two countries. Besides, China has announced 1 billion RMB assistance to Bangladesh.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured Bangladesh of a package of economic benefits and strong support for Rohingya repatriation. In a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Great Hall in Beijing, she announced a package of four types of economic benefits: grants, interest-free loans, concessional or discounted loans and commercial loans. Along with that, the President of China assured the highest cooperation in the repatriation of about 1.3 million Rohingya who took refuge in Bangladesh. He said he would talk to the Myanmar Army and if necessary the Arakan Army.
