Paris: India’s Dheeraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat missed out on a medal in mixed doubles archery at the Paris Olympics on Friday, losing 6-2 to the American pair of Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison in the bronze medal match. The fifth seeded pair of Dheeraj and Ankita had reached the bronze medal match after losing 2-6 to top seeded South Korean pair of Kim Woojin and Lim Sihyeon despite winning the first set in the semi-finals.
They did not have a good start against the American pair as they lost the first two sets. The Indian archers raised hopes of a comeback by winning the third set but the pair of Casey and Brady did not give them any chance and won the bronze medal 38-37, 37-35, 34-38, 37-35 before Dheeraj and Ankita lost to the South Korean pair 38-36, 35-38, 36-38, 38-39.
Dheeraj and Ankita started well and won the first set 38-36. Lim started with eight and 10 points while Kim scored nine points both times. Dheeraj hit both his shots on 10 points and ensured victory. The Indian pair lost the second set 35-38. Lim and Kim started with 10-10 points. Ankita could only score eight points in the first attempt while Dheeraj hit nine points. Both Lim and Kim ensured victory with nine points in the second attempt and the score became 2-2.
Dheeraj and Ankita lost the third set also 36-38. Lim started with nine points and Kim with 10 points, in response to which Ankita and Dheeraj scored nine points each. Lim and Kim made a strong score by doubling their points. Ankita then scored nine points, but with Dheeraj’s eight points, India lost the set and the team trailed 2-4. To take the match to a tiebreak, the Indian pair had to win the fourth and final set, but it did not happen. Both Ankita and Dheeraj started with nine points. Lim and Kim took the lead by scoring 10 points. Both Ankita and Dheeraj made a comeback by scoring 10 points, but Lim and Kim won the set and the match by scoring nine and 10 points respectively.
