Diana Tonova is the new leader of BSP – Sofia. She was elected by the delegates of the city conference with 82 votes, “24 Chasa” learned.
She was chosen by 19 votes more than her rival Gabriel Valkov – the leader of the youth organization of the left, who received the support of 63 of the delegates.
Initially, there were more than 10 candidates, but most of them withdrew at the beginning of the meeting. Among them are the former leader of the socialists in Sofia Kaloyan Pargov, the deputies Georgi Svilenski and Hristo Prodanov, the lawyer and former municipal councilor Milka Hristova, as well as the current councilor Ivan Peshev.
At 5:00 p.m., the leadership of the BSP will give a briefing at the party’s headquarters at 20 Positano, where they will announce the final results, as well as what will be the composition of the new city council.
The internal elections were reached after the municipal councilors of the BSP supported the candidate for the chairman of the Metropolitan Municipal Council of the PP-DB-SS Tsvetomir Petrov, in order to unblock the work of the SOS after the three-month blockade due to the lack of a chairman. However, this angered the central leadership, and at the end of February they announced that they were removing their confidence from the councilors and scheduling early internal elections. Across the country, BSP structures will hold a full reporting-election cycle in the fall, which will end with the election of a new party chairman.
