Minister of Health Arūnas Dulkys claims that only one candidate applied for the head of LSMU Kaunas Hospital. According to him, this is a clear signal to universities preparing doctors that efforts should be made not only in educating specialists, but also leaders, increasing attention to health management.

“Kaunas Hospital is one of the most important hospitals in the region – it is surprising that there was so little ambition in both the medical and academic community to try themselves at the helm of one of the largest secondary level medical institutions.

It is a clear signal that it is necessary to develop leadership and competition, to strengthen the quality of the teaching of health management disciplines even during the study years, because stagnant water does not benefit anyone. Despite the extremely small number of candidates, I believe that the new manager has the appropriate competences to continue the hospital’s consolidation work and ensure regional cooperation, thus demonstrating the hospital’s leadership in the entire region,” says A. Dulkys.

“I would like to create a modern hospital where the patient could receive quality consultations or treatment, where medical activities would be structured, health policy goals would be implemented, medical innovations would be introduced and the prestige of LSMU Kaunas Hospital would be formed. It is also important to strengthen the hospital’s base of studies and clinical practices, to expand residency bases, to improve the quality of studies, by educating managers and mentors of clinical practices, to develop scientific research”, says D. Žaliaduonytė.

She also emphasizes that the LSMU Kaunas hospital has many departments, separate infrastructural units, therefore one of the goals is to review their efficiency: determine the need for the services provided, reorganize duplicative and “shadowing” activities, optimize patient hospitalization, review the possibilities of moving part of the services to day stationary.
