New York: Princess Diana’s velvet dress fetches $6 lakh (roughly Rs. 4.9 crore) at auction. The purple gown was auctioned off in New York on Friday. The auction was organized by leading multinational Sotheby’s. The dress fetched five times the expected amount.
Diana wore this gown in an official portrait in 1991 and a Vanity Fire photoshoot in 1997. The dress was expected to fetch between $80,000 and $120,000. But 6,04,800 dollars was received. The dress was designed by British designer Victor Edelstein. The dress was made as part of the 1989 Autumn collection. The outline of the dress was shaped like a crown. Edelstein was Princess Diana’s longtime dress designer. From 1982 to 1993, Edelstiel designed clothes for Diana.
The dress was first sold at auction in 1997 for $24,150. It was one of the cocktail and evening dresses Diana decided to auction off that year. Proceeds from the auction went to the AIDS Crisis Trust and the Royal Marsden Hospital.
