Díaz-Canel arrives in Cuba after tour of the Middle East

The Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, returned to Cuba this Thursday after an international tour that took him to the Middle East and to high-level meetings of the United Nations (UN).

Díaz-Canel began several official visits to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran on November 28, where he held talks with his counterparts in addition to other activities.

He was also present at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), which took place in Dubai. He attended that meeting as pro-tempore president of the G77 + China group and as part of his work there, he inaugurated the Summit of the aforementioned group at the Conference.

Also in Dubai, the Cuban head of state spoke with the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with the secretary general of the United Nations, and with several prime ministers of African and Asian countries.

According to official reports, Qatar held an “official talks meeting” with the Emir at the Lusail Palace in Doha, to reinforce bilateral cooperation and to insist on mediation to achieve a cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. .

In Iran, in addition to the state talks, he held an exchange with businessmen, to whom he highlighted the business and investment opportunities on the island and its exportable offer.

Meanwhile, during a joint press conference, Díaz-Canel and his Iranian counterpart mentioned the need for bilateral exchange and the interest in collaborating closely in various areas to minimize the effects of Washington’s sanctions against both countries.

According to the Presidency of Cuba, the president arrived on Cuban lands at dawn. The prime minister and other authorities of the island went to receive him at the José Martí International Airport in Havana.

The Cuban president has maintained an active international policy that has included several tours of this type and state visits to various nations that share good relations with Cuba.

In recent years he has visited countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and now the Middle East, trips with which he has tried to bring the country closer to foreign business, renegotiate debts and credit payments and look for new forms of financing and agreements that can oxygenate the Cuban economy.
