The inflation data known this Friday -with food prices once again running wild at 10.8% in July- have served the acting second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, to once again demand greater forcefulness from the Government on business margins .

«The rise in inflation, derived from the price of fuel and food, especially affects those who have less. Since before the pandemic, food has risen 31%. You have to act on business margins and protect citizens, “he warned through his social network ‘X’ (Twitter).

This matter has caused moments of special tension in recent months between Díaz and the Ministry of Economy commanded by Nadia Calviño, which the Minister of Labor has accused on various occasions of having been too lukewarm with the new Observatory of Margins. A document that aims to bring together information on the origin of business results, but that will not force them to be linked to wage negotiations, as Díaz and the unions claimed.

A basic basket

From the CCOO and UGT they also showed themselves on Friday in favor of intervening what they consider “excessive margins in the food chain”, especially in the wholesale sector. That is, the intermediaries. And they advocated the creation of a “broad, quality and affordable” food basket that allows households to access basic products in full loss of purchasing power. “Inflation remains moderate, wages are beginning to gain purchasing power but it is still urgent to intervene in the price of food,” said the head of CCOO Youth, Adrià Junyent, on Friday.

From UGT they also criticize the lack of competition in distribution, “where a few have enough power to keep the prices of basic products so high to the detriment of the general interest.”

The problem is that the prospects are not very promising in the medium term. Both the Bank of Spain and the ECB consider that food is already a persistent problem in global economies. And both agencies warn that external factors such as climate change will continue to put pressure on basic products. All aggravated by the war in Ukraine, the breadbasket of the world, and a prolonged drought that is also affecting the quality of the pastures, the starting point of the production chain.
