Where we come from? What is the universe origin? Questions that human beings have been asking themselves for thousands of years and for which they still do not have a clear answer. In fact, space exploration in search of the origin of the cosmos and the search for extraterrestrial life are two of the fields of science that most arouse curiosity and imagination, both among the scientific community and the general public.

Cosmology and astronomy incessantly search every corner of space to explain what the beginning of everything was, an exploration that ranges from the Big Bang theory to the creation of galaxies, stars, planets and other celestial bodies. In that sense, Harvard scientists have not ruled out the possibility that the creation of Earth – yes, our planet – is related to extraterrestrial life.

A theory that, although not all members of this prestigious university share, is defended by others, among whom is Avi Loeb, former president of the Department of Astronomy at Harvard University.

Our universe, created in a laboratory

This physicist assures that extraterrestrials could be the creators of different universes, and one of those universes would be none other than the one in which the Earth is located. “Given that our universe has a flat geometry with zero net energy, an advanced civilization could have developed a technology that created a baby universe from nothing through quantum tunneling,” this Harvard scientist detailed in an article that was published in ‘Scientific American’ magazine.

“I look for intelligence in space because I often don’t find it on Earth”

This possibility that Loeb defends is based, in his words, on the fact that “our universe has been created in the laboratory of an advanced technological civilization.”

“This possible origin story unifies the religious notion of a creator with the secular notion of quantum gravity. We do not have a predictive theory that combines the two pillars of modern physics: quantum mechanics and gravity. But a more advanced civilization could have achieved this feat and mastered the technology to create baby universes,” says Loeb’s article.

“May the possibility of extraterrestrial life convince us to act together”

Avi Loeb’s controversial theory – which he himself argues comes from modesty, since the most reasonable thing is to think that we are not alone in the immensity of the cosmos – is based on a basic principle for the scientist: “I look for intelligence in space because I often don’t find it here on Earth.”

“Throughout human history I see people fighting each other, trying to feel superior, and that makes very little sense in the grand scheme of the universe, because we are all so insignificant that it makes no sense to try to feel superior to each other. “Loeb lamented in an interview with ‘BBC Mundo’. And it seems that he is right, seeing the current escalation of armed conflicts around the world, such as that in Ukraine or Israel.

“We could behave much more intelligently before being admitted to the intelligence club, so I hope that the possibility of extraterrestrial life will convince us to act together and have a better future than our past.”
