Opposition lawmakers on the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee have been pressuring Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-im to resign, criticizing his eldest son for his illegal overseas stay and marijuana smoking suspicions. The ruling party has responded by saying that pointing out his child’s medical history is an inhumane attack under the guise of verification.
Opposition lawmakers from the National Assembly’s Defense Committee criticized the candidate in a statement on the 9th, saying, “The candidate responded to written questions in advance by saying that his son had to stay illegally in the U.S. due to a certain illness and that he had also been hospitalized because of that illness, but this was not true.”
Opposition lawmakers disclosed hospital records submitted to the court, pointing out that Yoo’s son was forcibly admitted to a local hospital while he was an illegal immigrant in the United States in 2013. The hospital reportedly wrote a medical record stating that Yoo’s son “was smoking marijuana irregularly” after two weeks of treatment and observation.
Opposition lawmakers criticized the issue, saying, “This issue itself is not trivial, but the more important and fundamental problem is that the candidate is trying to cover up issues that could be disadvantageous to him by using his son’s illness as a reason.”
He then pressured them, saying, “We urge candidate Yoo to voluntarily resign and President Yoon Seok-yeol to withdraw his nomination.”
Ruling party lawmakers responded with a statement of rebuttal, saying that the Democratic Party omitted the phrase “no drugs” from the hospital transfer records and that the Democratic Party had excerpted the information. They also expressed strong regret over the disclosure of the candidate’s family’s hospital records, which the ruling and opposition parties agreed to verify privately.
People Power Party lawmakers criticized, ”Above all, they refused to listen to the statement of a professor at Seoul National University Hospital who observed and treated the candidate’s children’s illnesses without fail and even received U.S. records,” and “They cleverly extracted and distorted some of the U.S. hospital records to attack the candidate’s family. This is serious defamation.”
He then raised his voice, saying, “There is a golden rule for personnel hearings. Every family has painful wounds, and even parents have unfortunate stories that they cannot help. Today, the opposition party has crossed that golden rule,” and “A hearing that verifies policies and standards for appointing ministers has become an inhumane and despicable attack channel that uses the painful wounds of a family to claim that a candidate should be disqualified.”
Candidate Yoo’s side stated in a statement that day, “We would like to state once again that we explained to him honestly all the facts that occurred during the closed-door hearing regarding our eldest son’s military exemption process.” They continued, “As a parent of a sick child, I feel sorry that I could not take better care of him, and as a father, I feel heartbroken that his personal information was disclosed regardless of his wishes.”
