This made it a double victory on home ground for this year’s winners of Vasaloppet (Syrstad) and Marcialonga (Mathisen). The two Lager 157 runners linked their grip on the race towards the end, but Mathisen was unable to hang on to Syrstad.
In very tough conditions with soft and loose snow, the 30-year-old from Lundamo won with a margin of two minutes and 50 seconds to Mathisen. Along the way, Syrstad had several accidents, including several pole breaks, so he had no painless way to victory.
– The heaviest race I have run, exclaimed Syrstad in the finish area.
– We knew it was going to be a real struggle. People eventually fell off, I have to give a real thank you to the people in the smørebua. We become one and two, and it proves that we had fantastic skiing, he elaborated to NRK, before revealing:
– I have had one fall and three pole bumps in addition to going wrong. It was good to take it, because it didn’t go smoothly today.
The Swedish Team Aker Dæhlie runner Max Novak was third, while Birken winner Andreas Nygaard took 4th place.
In the women’s class, it was a clear victory for Emilie Fleten. She led by almost eight minutes at the last interval and went to the finish line alone.
