Identical sources told Libya Al-Ahrar that a decision was circulated within the Presidential Council to suspend the Governor of the Central Bank, Al-Siddiq Al-Kabeer.

According to the sources, the decision was made by presidential decree due to the disposal of financial amounts that were on deposit in one of the countries without legal cover, according to them.

The sources added that the Presidential Council took this step because it has presidential powers, due to the vacancy of the governor’s position due to his previous dismissal and the expiry of the maximum legal term for the governor, estimated at 10 years.

On the other hand, sources close to the governor denied to Al-Ahrar that any decision had been issued to suspend or dismiss him from his position.

Sources close to the Central Bank told Al-Ahrar that the Presidential Council does not have the authority to suspend or dismiss the Central Bank Governor according to the constitutional declaration.

The sources added that their relationship with the Presidential Council is special, calling on all parties to prioritize the interest of the country and keep the Central Council away from political conflicts, as it is the last stronghold of Libyans’ money and the country’s resources, according to their expression.

Previous dismissal

In September 2014, members of the House of Representatives voted by majority to dismiss Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir from his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

In December 2017, the Council members voted by majority to appoint Mohamed Al-Shokri as Governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

Amid the Supreme Council’s rejection of the decision based on the political agreement in accordance with “Article 15” of the political agreement, which stipulated consultation in choosing leadership positions, which was one of the reasons for Al-Kabir’s continuation in his position.
