THE QUESTION. Whatever one thinks and despite the difficulties encountered by the Russian army on the ground, Vladimir Putin appears for the moment to be reinforced by his “special military operation” in Ukraine. The popularity of the Russian president jumped twelve points compared to February, 83% of Russians questioned approving his action (against 71% last month), according to an opinion poll published Thursday by the Levada institute. This is the first survey conducted since the start of the offensive in Ukraine on February 24 by this independent body. Moreover, 81% of Russians support the action of their army in Ukraine, 53% sayingquite favorable“and 28%”rather favorable“, according to Levada. 14% of respondents do not support the military operation.

But how do we judge the sharp increase in Vladimir Putin’s approval rating and the high support for the intervention in Ukraine? In the conditions of limited freedom of expression in Russia, are the results of these polls credible?
