San Salvador. Every January 21, Hug Day is celebrated internationally, a date created in the 1980s by Kevin Zaborney, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, with the aim of improving the physical and mental health of people who were fighting various reasons for stress.

Zaborney assured that this simple display of affection has numerous benefits for people, from lowering blood pressure to providing security and generating trust. However, what little is known is its impact on newborns for whom ‘skin-to-skin’ contact is essential to be able to develop and grow without complications.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), prematurity is the main cause of infant mortality up to the age of five worldwide. Despite this, 75% of these deaths can be prevented with simple solutions and this is where contact plays a key role.

One of the best-known techniques is Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), an effective and easy-to-implement intervention to reduce mortality in premature or low birth weight babies.

It consists of ensuring skin-to-skin contact between the baby and its mother, continuously for at least 20 hours, or intermittently; that is, as many hours as possible. The Kangaroo method helps the baby regulate his breathing and the heat of her body, and also promotes breastfeeding and promotes bonding with her mother.

For Huggies, caring for the baby during the first months of life is essential and accompanying parents during the different stages of their little ones is one of its main objectives.

In order to increase awareness about the role of hugging for the healthy development of children in the region, Kimberly-Clark made a new Instagram filter available to its digital consumers.
