According to the Medio Camino National Health and Nutrition Survey, in Mexico there are 6.4 million people with diabetes. Of this figure, 2.84 million are men and 3.56 million are women.

This condition, which is more common in women, is due to the fact that in this group there is a higher rate of overweight and obesity, which are the main triggers that lead to type II mellitus.

Gestational diabetes can become type II

During pregnancy, some women develop gestational diabetes, which is a condition that often goes away with Baby’s birth. However, those who suffer from it have between 30 and 70 percent of developing type II.

In 2021, of the total deaths in Mexico, 13 percent were due to this disease (specifically, 140,729), according to data from the Statistics of Registered Deaths. It should also be noted that the highest percentage of deaths from the disease were carried out by men: 51% compared to 49%.

Along with heart disease and cancer, it is the leading cause of death

Concretely, 69 thousand 396 Mexican women died from diabetes, while the male patients who died from this disease were 71,330.

Diabetes is already among the three main diseases that cause the death of Mexican women, the top 10 being the following:

What is clear is that in Mexico, public health continues to present significant gender gapssince, although diabetes is not the case, they are significantly more affected by obesity problems, non-communicable diseases and mental illnesses, as revealed by the National Health Survey (Ensanut).
