The euro celebrated its 20th anniversary in circulation on January 1, 2022 and, although cash payments are gradually losing weight, the European Union wants to vindicate the importance of the euro as a common symbol with a new design that will be ready in 2024. This was announced. the European Central Bank (ECB), which has the public consultation period open to choose the theme of the new design.

In order for the new banknotes to have an image that reflects the common European identity, the ECB, the Bank of Spain and the rest of the national central banks have launched a public survey so that all citizens of the euro zone can give their opinion on what could be the subject of your future image. Among the proposed themes there are seven very diverse options.

“The objective of the survey is to share with all citizens the adventure of designing the new image and that, when the decision to print them is made, our opinion is taken into account and we feel very much ours,” says the Bank of Spain.

Once the theme for the new banknotes has been chosen, the ECB will hold a design competition open to the public, although the ECB Governing Council will have the last word on the new design of the banknotes and coins. After concluding the process, the Governing Council will authorize the manufacture of the new euro banknotes and will decide the possible dates of issue.

How to participate and themes

The process is currently in the topic selection phase. Around 20,000 people have already answered the survey in its Spanish edition to choose the theme, do you want to participate? You can do it from this link following the steps indicated below.

On the first screen of the survey, the ECB details its objective, “to make your voice heard and play a direct role in the decision on the design of future euro banknotes”, and indicates that for each topic a brief description of the idea, a related argument and a possible design. However, the new design will be developed later in the creation process.

Once you have read the description and accepted the privacy policy, you must choose which topics you like the most and which you like the least and indicate why, as well as detailing the country in which you live, your gender, age, level of studies, occupation and the method of payment that you use the most when buying in physical establishments.

The seven themes and their designs among which you can assess are the following:

1. European values reflected in nature

This theme represents the six values of the European Union (EU) defined in the Treaty of Lisbon: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and human rights. It also illustrates our connection and respect for nature and the environment.

Possible design: A banknote representing democracy could use visual elements such as images of the European Parliament, of the voting process (represented by a hand), or a European seascape with a beach, where every grain of sand counts, as does every European citizen.

2. Rivers: the waters of life in Europe

The theme is inspired by European landscapes and combines the natural wonders of Europe with a broader message of interconnectedness and sustainability.

Possible design; the banknotes could show parts of the European rivers that cross the borders: from the source to the sea, passing through rugged mountains, cultivated landscapes and big cities, from the quiet solitude to the bustling trade.

3. Our Europe, we

The theme celebrates the individual and collective life of the inhabitants of Europe through six actions: being, doing, thinking, loving, communicating and living.

Possible design: Each banknote could have an image representing our human individuality together with symbols of our common European values and aspirations. Communicating, for example, could be illustrated with a human mouth and other images that represent freedom of expression and the richness of languages.

4. Hands: together we build Europe

The theme is inspired by the EU motto: “United in diversity” and represents all the people who have created Europe. The theme will represent the six EU values defined in the Lisbon Treaty: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and human rights, expressed through images of hands to make the EU values more present and human.

Possible design: A banknote could represent the European value of the Rule of Law with the image of a hand holding the scales of justice.

5. European culture

European culture is a rich and diverse mosaic of cultural and creative expression, a heritage from previous generations of Europeans and a legacy for future generations. European culture teaches each generation of Europeans about the past and prepares them for the future, while contributing to the cohesion and well-being of our societies.

Possible design: The banknotes could represent monuments, works of art, literature, music or science and their creators. A banknote could display, for example, the image of a famous European work of art and the artist who created it.

6. The future is yours

The theme focuses on Europeans and their potential to shape the future of Europe with their ideas and vision. It pays tribute to each and every European, and their skills and visions, in fields ranging from science and technology to art.

Possible design: The banknotes could show a silhouette that would represent any person, combined with images related to different fields such as science (for example, astronomy) and associated professions or areas of specialization (for example, astronauts).

7. Birds: free, resilient and evocative

The theme is inspired by one of the first EU legal acts on the environment – the “Birds Directive” – which aims to protect the EU’s 500 species of wild birds.

Possible design: each banknote could take its color and images from a specific European bird, with motifs in keeping with the seasons of the year, European landscapes or human activities. A banknote could feature an owl, which symbolizes wisdom, a winter landscape, and a human activity that represents knowledge, such as science.
