Breakdown, lack of efficiency… The AdBlue product is in the sights of theUFC-What to choose. The consumer defense association announced on Wednesday that it will seize the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF). “While failures related to the AdBlue system have been known to manufacturers for a long time, they have preferred to close their eyes and continue to sell these defective vehicles”, deplores the association.

Used for cars for about ten years, AdBlue is produced from urea. It eliminates a large part of the harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the exhaust gases of diesel-powered cars.

But more than 1,700 drivers alerted UFC-Que Choisir after receiving messages such as “emission control fault” or “impossible to start in XXX km” on the dashboards of their vehicles, forcing them to go to a garage.

1,000 euros in costs on average

According to the association, most car brands are concerned, even if the majority of the failures observed come from Peugeot and Citroën vehicles.

The failures reported to UFC-Que Choisir resulted in a remaining charge for more than 91% of consumers, with an average amount close to 1000 euros. “The repair is not always conclusive,” adds the association.

UFC-Que Choisir has therefore alerted the European Commission: it “requires that a European-wide investigation be launched on the practices of manufacturers around AdBlue”, as well as “full responsibility for repairs in the face of this recurring problem”, including for drivers who have had a breakdown in the past. In addition, it recommends “requiring manufacturers to remedy AdBlue-related failures”.
