A new international study has shed light on the impact of certain foods on the risk of developing cancer. Conducted by researchers who analyzed the data of nearly 200,000 people from Great Britain, this study reveals alarming findings regarding high-risk eating habits.

The subjects of the study, aged between 49 and 69, had their daily diets accurately recorded between 2009 and 2012. Over a median follow-up period of 9.8 years, 15,921 participants developed cancer, resulting in 4,009 deaths. This data enabled the researchers to draw correlations between nutrition and the likelihood of cancer.

Of particular concern was the consumption of highly processed foods, which accounted for an average of almost 23 percent of the participants’ diets. The study found that a 10 percent increase in the consumption of these foods led to a two percent increase in the overall risk of cancer, with a six percent rise in the death rate. However, the risks were even higher for specific types of cancer.

Ovarian cancer risk increased by 19 percent with a 10 percent increase in the consumption of highly processed foods, and the death rate rose by 30 percent. Breast cancer also saw a 16 percent increase in the death rate with the same increase in consumption. Furthermore, the study highlighted that individuals with the highest consumption of highly processed foods faced the highest risk of brain tumors.

According to the German Nutrition Society, highly processed foods are described as “ready-to-eat products that are produced by combining food-based or synthetic ingredients.” Examples provided by nutrition experts include fruit yogurt or cereals with added sugar and additives, packaged bread, soft drinks, salty or fried snacks, sweets, ready meals, and processed meats such as sausages.
