Digi reinforces its offensive in Spain. The Romanian operator has announced the launch of 5G mobile services for all its customers, without increasing costs on their bills. In a statement, the low-cost teleco has indicated that, “with this launch, it reaffirms its commitment to innovation and technology and represents a step forward towards a more connected digital future.”

As explained by Digi, customers who have a mobile phone compatible with 5G technology can now access this service automatically and free of charge. The company has indicated that, with 5G technology, the speed is up to 10 times faster than with 4G.

Digi, which uses Telefónica’s mobile network to offer its services, thus responds to competitors such as Orange and Vodafone, which in recent weeks have launched 5G services in their low-cost brands, Simyo and Lowi, respectively. 5G has been a differentiating tool for large telecoms to face the commercial pressure of alternative operators with their low-cost rates.

With this move, Digi is reinforced in the Spanish market, where it has consolidated itself as the fifth operator, with more than 6.1 million lines, thanks to its aggressive offers, which have led the operator to lead portability during the last two years.

Now, with the corporate movements underway in the sector as a whole, Digi will become the fourth national operator, once the merger of Orange and MásMóvil is closed. In fact, it has signed separate agreements with these companies, which will be key to obtaining authorization from the European Commission.

Last December, Digi closed an agreement to purchase different mobile phone spectrum concessions from the former Yoigo, owned by MásMóvil, for an amount of 120 million euros.

In addition, it signed an agreement with Orange by which the Romanian operator will have the option in the future for a national roaming agreement with the French group, including all mobile technologies available for the different brands of the future joint venture, including 5G.
