Vodafone leads the falls in customers among the main operators

Headquarters of DigiEMEmpresas The big ‘telecos’ launch to subsidize mobile phones: up to 1,160 euros discount

The first six months of 2023 have had an invariable constant in the telephone and connectivity market compared to the previous year: the dominance of low cost and the king of this segment: the Romanian operator Digi. The company, on the back of its cheap rates, continues to bite into the market and has managed to get off the ground in these six months 425,500 lines to its competitors, according to provisional data handled by the market and to which EL MUNDO has had access.

Digi It has been since the announcement of the merger between Orange and MsMvil, being considered by the big players in the sector as the great threat to the status quo of the market and an eventual consolidation to get prices to pick up after the fall of recent years and the turn to low. general market cost.

This trend is especially pronounced in the mobile segment, where Digi has reaped most of its profits with almost 340,000 new customers, more than 70,000 in the last month of June. Together with Digi, they remain positive Avatelwhich has added more than 40,000 mobile lines so far this year, and MsMvilwhich resists positively with almost 9,000 more customers in this segment, although it closed June with a negative balance.

The other side of the coin is represented by the three main operators: Movistar, Orange y Vodafone, although, although the three have finished the first semester in negative, the way of seeing the future is very different. In the case of Movistarthe company leaves just under 70,000 lines so far this year, a figure that, if the trend continues, would allow it to close the year losing less than half of what I lost in all of 2022 in this segment, which will demonstrate the commercial improvement of the group after the launch of its new rate portfolio: MiMovistar.

In his latest earnings presentation, the company’s CEO, Angel Willassured that the first quarter in Spain was the best at a commercial level for the company since September 2020, as well as showing confidence in an upward trend as the year progressed.

In similar terms as far as line loss moves Orange. The French company leaves 65,000 mobile lines, a progression that would also allow it to end the year losing significantly fewer customers in this segment than the previous year and is expected to grow notably once its merger with MsMvilsomething that could be made to wait until 2024.

The most negative face of the market, however, is undoubtedly shown by Vodafone. The company of British origin suffers a mobile indentation that is close to 285,000 lines losses at the hands of operators so far this year. By dimensioning the magnitude of the fall, the company has lost 100,000 more lines in half a year than in the full 2022. To counteract the dynamic, the firm launched several discount promotions on handsets.

Various sources consulted by THE WORLD warn that, if the dynamics continue, investments in 5G could be compromised in Spain, since the client is betting on a type of non-industrial operator, known as OMV, which penalizes those who bear the investor weight. However, both Movistaras Orange y Vodafone han applied this to price hikes in their rates to compensate for inflation, which has also influenced their commercial performance with operators that have not made these increases, as is the case with Digi.

FIXED SEGMENT

Despite the fact that the situation alarms the big names in the sector, the truth is that the market is at a something more rational than in the past year, which is also represented in the fixed segment. These changes of company are considered more strategic for the operators, since, when a family changes fixed internet provider, more money is lost than with a mobile-only customer, since the rate is higher, and usually entails changing the mobile lines that live in the home and that are usually negotiated in a pack by families.

However, the dynamic has been similar with Digi stepping on the accelerator and touching the 90,000 lines incorporated into its client portfolio, which will allow it to make a notable leap in this segment, where it is deploying its own high-speed fiber optics in urban areas.

He is followed behind MsMvilwhich has exhibited greater strength in this segment than in mobile lines, where it is penalized for its multiple prepaid brands, and about 39,000 customers are recorded in the next six months. A unique case is that of Orangewhose customer base has remained practically unchanged so far this year, after a strong start has been offset by a decline in recent months, which has left its balance practically at 0. Something they can’t say Vodafone y Telephonewhich have lost some 83,500 and almost 120,000 customers respectively in this segment.
