Digitally through the fire

Würzburg – In the future, firefighters in Bavaria will also fight digital fires – at least during training at the state firefighting school in Würzburg.

“In the future, our firefighters will be able to play through all conceivable operational situations realistically and safely in simulations with so-called virtual reality glasses without complex preparation of exercise scenarios,” said Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) on Monday according to the announcement.

Repetitions of the respective deployment situations are possible, and one can also observe oneself in 3D space and analyze one’s own behavior.

With virtual reality technology, computers create a virtual environment to simulate realistic scenes. With the help of headsets and modern technology, users can be placed in specific situations. This technology is used, for example, in amusement parks for roller coaster rides, but also by the police to construct crime scenes.

There are three state fire service schools in Bavaria. Around 15,000 firefighters are trained every year at the Regensburg, Geretsried and Würzburg locations.

According to the Digital Ministry, it is providing around 260,000 euros for the virtual training. “In the coming years we also want to equip the districts and urban districts with such a training facility,” said Herrmann – the Free State will provide more than 650,000 euros for this.
