Digital India Bill: 11 Key Features to Regulate Websites and Combat Cybercrime

The central government is planning to introduce the Digital India Bill with 11 significant features in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The Union government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is regularly passing new bills for the amendment of laws in India. The Digital India Bill will be a new comprehensive law considering the vast development and revolution in information technology. The Indian government plans to pass this bill during the upcoming winter session after the consultations, which will start this month.

India is the country with the largest internet usage globally as presently 85 crore people use the internet, and it projected to increase to 120 crores by 2025. Thus, the Digital India Bill will ensure every website is safe, reliable, and secure to use, with provisions to maintain the user’s privacy and trust. This bill aims to regulate websites in India and fight cybercrime by monitoring and taking action against websites containing content like obscene images, sexual violence against children, copyright infringement, spreading false information, impersonation against unity and integrity of India, computer malware, banned online games, and others.

The latest revision of Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Code of Digital Media Ethics) Rules 2021 has listed the above contents. The Digital India Bill will hold the central government responsible for the relevant website/platform, causing problems related to the listed contents.

Delhi: The central government is serious about bringing the Digital India Bill with 11 important features. The bill will be tabled in the next winter session of Parliament.

The Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is passing various new bills in the Parliament. Bills are being tabled and passed in every session of Parliament regarding the change and amendment of law to be brought in India.

In this situation, the central government is showing interest in bringing a new ‘Digital India Bill’. Information Technology Act 2000 and the amendments made in the Act are dealing with IT related matters in India. Considering the huge revolution in information technology, the central government is taking steps to bring the Digital India Act as a new integrated law.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said an important thing about the bill. He said about this: Digital India Bill is being prepared. Consultations on the Digital India Bill will begin this month. We plan to pass this bill in the coming winter session.

In 2014, India did not go digital. But now 85 crore people are using internet in the country. We have become the country with the largest internet usage in the world. By 2025, this number will rise to 120 crore. And in today’s environment every website needs to be very secure and reliable. It is responsible on respective websites. For this a provision will be included in the Digital India Bill, which deals with maintaining the security and trust of the users of these platforms.

And after the passage of this bill, the government plans to bring the law into effect this year. The bill will regulate websites in India and fight cybercrime. There are 11 main features of this bill. It will play an important role in preventing 11 things including sexual harassment of children, incitement to religious hatred, copyright infringement and spreading of false information on social media,” he said.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that this bill focuses on 11 things. Accordingly, the details of those 11 important features have been released. That is to monitor and take action on websites that contain obscene images, sexual violence against children, and posts that are harmful to children. It will help in monitoring and taking action on copyright infringement, spreading of untruthful information, impersonation, essence against unity and integrity of India, computer malware, banned online games.

These essences are listed in the latest revision of Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Code of Digital Media Ethics) Rules 2021. However, it is worth noting that the Digital India Bill will provide a place in the law for the central government to hold the relevant website or platforms responsible for the problems caused by the above.
