Almost three weeks after the disappearance of their loved one, they are demanding answers. Nearly 200 people participated in a “peaceful march” in Dijon on Saturday in tribute to Check Camara, an 18-year-old Ivorian who died in mysterious circumstances in early July.
“Justice for Check”, chanted the demonstrators as they marched through the center of Dijon at the call of the family and organizations such as Solidaires and the Human Rights League. “We want to know what happened. We want answers, ”Alassane Doumbia, the uncle of Check Camara who hosted the young man who arrived in France as a teenager, told the press.

Check Camara’s body was found on July 10 in a section of the Burgundy Canal running along the center of Dijon. Three days earlier, on July 7, the young man allegedly had an altercation with one or more people, according to his uncle.
“There is nothing to question the police services”
The police would then have “pursued” the young Ivorian, according to the uncle. A video, posted on social networks, shows Check Camara walking on the banks of the L’Ouche river, not far from the canal, while being followed by two police officers posted on a bridge.
The family’s lawyer, Jean-Baptiste Gavignet, said a complaint against X for “failure to provide assistance” had been filed. The prosecution confirmed the filing of the complaint but indicated that, “as it stands, there was nothing to implicate the police services”.

The prosecution did not want to specify whether the autopsy had confirmed or invalidated the thesis of drowning and whether there had been blows and injuries. However, in an interview with Good publicthe deputy prosecutor assured that there was “no trace of violence”, which tended “to confirm the drowning”.
“We expect exemplary work from justice,” said Dieynaba Baldé, president of SOS Racisme Côte d’Or. “All the rights of these young people must be respected,” she added. “There are too many gray areas. There was a chase. We would like to know what happened, ”insisted Anne Varnaton, marching in the pink vest of the Solidaires union.
