Diogo Jota Shines as Liverpool Marks Premier League Return with Victory Over Ipswich

by time news

A goal from the Portuguese international forward Diogo Jota opened the way for Liverpool’s victorious debut in the 2024/25 Premier League edition, with a 2-0 win against Ipswich.

It was a game of debuts, marking a new cycle for the ‘reds’ after the departure of charismatic coach Jürgen Klopp, who led the team for the past nine seasons, and the arrival of Arne Slot (former Feyenoord coach), as well as the return of Ipswich to the top tier of English football.

At Portman Road, Liverpool had a lukewarm first half and faced difficulties, but in the second half, everything changed, with the ‘reds’ becoming more intense and threatening to score, which came just before the hour mark.

Mohamed Salah escaped down the left and assisted Diogo Jota in the middle, allowing the Portuguese to make it 1-0 near the penalty spot at the 60-minute mark.

Soon after, it was the Egyptian international who extended the lead and provided some comfort to the Liverpool team against Ipswich’s attempts at quick transitions, with Salah scoring the 2-0 at the 65-minute mark.

The Egyptian broke the record he previously shared with Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, and Alan Shearer for scoring consecutively in the opening game of the English league, now having goals in nine opening matches, more than any other player.

For Ipswich, which is back in the Premier League after 22 years, it wasn’t the best of debuts, but the team, which had singer and recent shareholder Ed Sheeran in the stands, knew that the task would always be very difficult.

The first round of the English League continues today, having started on Friday with Manchester United’s 1-0 victory, with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, at home against Fulham, coached by Marco Silva.
