A groundbreaking new study funded by the EU’s Horizon Fund is set to revolutionize the early detection of colon cancer. The DIOPTRA project will combine AI and blood tests to make screening for colorectal cancer more accessible and effective.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Traditional screening methods, such as colonoscopy, can be invasive and uncomfortable, leading to low participation rates. The DIOPTRA project aims to make screening easier and more widely available by focusing on non-invasive blood markers that can identify the disease.

The study, which has just begun, will involve at least 1,600 participants across eight clinical sites and will last two and a half years. This extensive screening aims to make the screening method more robust and broadly applicable. The research will harness the power of AI to identify not only who is at risk of developing colorectal cancer, but also why they are at that risk.

“This is a milestone for the DIOPTRA project and for colon cancer research in general,” said Zheshen JIANG, clinical coordinator of the study and R&D scientist and project manager at the Center Hospitalier Universitaire de Liège (CHUL).

The hope is that this new approach will significantly improve colorectal cancer screening, expanding participation to other population groups than those currently reimbursed. By combining the latest blood test technology with machine learning algorithms, the DIOPTRA project has the potential to revolutionize the early detection of colon cancer.]
