Mathilde Favier, the longtime public relations director for Christian Dior Couture, died Monday in a head-on car crash in western France at the age of 57. The tragic collision also claimed the life of her partner, French film producer Nicolas Altmayer.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday along the D938 road in Airvault, situated within France’s Deux-Sèvres department. According to Nicolas Leclainche, deputy prosecutor at the Niort prosecutor’s office, the vehicle carrying Favier and Altmayer collided head-on with a heavy goods vehicle while attempting to overtake another car on the roadway.
Altmayer, 61, was a figure in French cinema, known for co-leading the production company Mandarin & Compagnie alongside his brother, Éric, and producing comedies including OSS 117 and Brice de Nice, both starring Jean Dujardin. In the wake of the crash, the prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter to determine the precise mechanics of the collision.

Fashion was part of Favier’s identity from her earliest years. Born and raised in Paris, she was the half-sister of Victoire de Castellane, Dior’s creative director of fine jewelry. Favier’s entry into the industry began in her teens when her uncle, Gilles Dufour—a collaborator of Karl Lagerfeld—secured her an internship at Chanel.
Before anchoring her career in luxury public relations, Favier attended the Institut de l’Assomption (known as Lübeck), studying alongside designers Vanessa Seward and Camille Miceli, as well as stylist Emmanuelle Alt.
