The vines suffer
While the harvest starts today in the Haut-Rhin, continuing in Bordeaux, the stinging heat observed for a few days “is roasting the bunches on the vine”, testifies a winegrower from Limouxin to the Parisian. The heat wave adds to the mildew, which has already done a lot of damage to this year’s harvests.

On the interest of large trees in the city and the canopy index
Studies show that the presence of tree branches and leaves in a “tree canopy” – therefore trees over 3m high – can, in a neighborhood, lower the thermometer by 4 to 5 degrees in hot weather. The foliage first blocks the sun, whose rays will heat the ground less, and it transpires, water vapour, modifying the feeling in the atmosphere.
The percentage of a city’s area occupied by treetop cover is called the canopy index and is measured from aerial views. In Paris, in 2019 it was 21% including the Bois de Vincennes and Boulogne, and 14% without.

Very high temperatures in Spain
Between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., Spain expects to record sheltered temperatures above 42°C in several of its regions. This will be the case in the Basque country, placed in “extreme risk”, along the border with Portugal, in Catalonia and Andalusia.

“Bodies are never at rest”

What Meteo France forecasts
“Certain absolute records risk again being beaten during” between today and tomorrow, warns the Institute of Meteorology in its morning bulletin, “especially towards the Rhône valley and the south of Toulouse, with 40 to 42 degrees planned”.
Minimum temperatures are rising during these two days, to the point that vigilance could be high in the south of New Aquitaine. “The end of the episode is still difficult to detail, with potentially marked storms”, concludes Météo France.

Several museums will be free from this Wednesday in Lyon, while Marseille extends the free access to municipal swimming pools until Sunday.

What weather this Wednesday?
The weather will still be stifling over a large southern half of France, where minimum temperatures will not drop below 20 to 25 degrees in general, or even 22 to 27 degrees. During the day the heat will increase. It will be between 34 and 39 degrees from Vendée to Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 36 to 40 degrees in the south but often up to 40 to 42 degrees, very occasionally 43, from the Rhône valley to the south-west of the country.
On the other hand, from Brittany and the north of the Loire to Benelux, in the early morning we will appreciate a little freshness with minimums between 13 and 18 degrees in general, then in the afternoon the temperatures will remain between 28 and 34 degrees, 22 to 27 at the edge of the Channel.
