Despite the war in Ukraine, the EU has increased its purchases of Russian liquefied gas (LNG).

Investing in port terminals, they increased their purchases of LNG by 70% last year, transported by ships and coming more than 40% from the United States. Imports of Russian LNG, notably via TotalEnergies which has invested heavily in Siberia, have also soared. Gas is not subject to any sanctions or restrictions.

Concretely, Russia’s share of EU gas imports (gas pipeline and LNG) fell to 15% during the first seven months of 2023, compared to 24% in 2022 and 45% in 2021.

But this decline camouflages the jump in Russian LNG purchases to 12.4 billion m3 (bcm) over January-July (17% of European LNG purchases), compared to 19.3 bcm for the whole of 2022 and 13.5 bcm for the whole of 2021, according to the European Commission.
