The Libration newspaper reports that the director was not sick, just exhausted. Sources of the family reveal instead that he was suffering from serious diseases. Essential condition according to the Swiss end of life

Director Jean-Luc Godard, who passed away yesterday at the age of 91, would have resorted to assisted suicide in Switzerland finally managing to carry out his convictions. This was revealed by the French newspaper Delivery who today broke the news of his death, thus denying that Godard died in Paris, as was initially disclosed. On this delicate and dangerous passage, however, the versions do not agree.

His wife Anne-Marie Mivilleand the producers confirmed his death today in the late morning, explaining that he passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones in Rolle, on the shores of Lake Geneva. The French newspaper reports that the director he wasn’t sick, he was simply exhaustedreferring to the testimony of a family friend: He had therefore decided to end it all – explains the newspaper, adding that another person close to the director confirmed the assisted suicide -, it was her decision and it was important that she make it knownDid the artist choose to die, even though he is not suffering from any disease?

The Swiss press agency Ats provides a different version: According to a member of Godard’s staff The body was tired, not following him anymore. He could no longer live normally due to various pathologies. For a man so independent, so honest it was a big obstacle not having the physical means of him like everyone else. The same source confesses that death was to be announced in 48 hours but the French press anticipated the news.

This second version seems more in line with the Swiss end of life law. The latter, which entered into force in 2009, admits not euthanasia but only assisted suicide (that is, it must be the patient who gives himself the death, without the external intervention of doctors). The event must be authorized by a medical commission that certifies some requirements, first of all an irreversible disease and the patient’s clear will. In addition, only five clinics in Switzerland are authorized to carry out assisted suicide.

In a’interview from 2014Godard said he was in favor of assisted suicide, explaining that he did not want to spend the last days of his life unable to move: I have no anxiety to continue at any cost. If I’m too sick, I don’t want to be dragged into a wheelbarrow…, he had said on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival on the Pardonnez-moi broadcast of the Swiss radio and television RTS. When asked directly about the possibility of resorting to assisted suicide, he replied yes, adding that for the moment this choice is still very difficult. And then he continued: I often ask my doctor, my lawyer, so, “if I came to ask you about barbiturates (…), morphine, would you give them to me?” … I haven’t had a positive answer yet.

The death of the filmmaker was also greeted by the actor among others Alain Delon who in turn had expressed the possibility of resorting to the end of life: A page in the history of cinema closes … Thank you, Jean-Luc, for the good memories you left us. Know that I will always be proud to have “Nouvelle Vague” in my filmography said Delon commenting on the director’s death, recalling the 1990 film in which they worked together.
