Dirty laundry is (not) washed in the family

Time.news – There is an increasingly large group of people who believe in the need to wash clothes less, or not to wash them at all. It is the “low-wash” or “no-wash” front.

These are groups where they mix environmentalist tendencies but also beliefs of the need for a radical change of habits typical of the years of unbridled consumerism. A trend that intertwines with the fanatics of the minimalist wardrobe and microscopic homes. But the no-wash seems to go even further, to the point that today there is (and has achieved a certain popularity) the Indigo Invitational Fade Competition, a competition in which people from all over the world wear raw denim jeans for a year, strictly without washing it, and are then judged on the basis of the vintage fades or streaks of stained or bleached fabric that are created.

Now in its fifth year, the Indigo Invitational has seen nine out of ten competitors show up wearing pants washed once every 150/200 uses. The smells? Sure, there are, and participants confirm that they can be particularly biting. But experts seem to have a remedy: “sunbathing” (leaving clothes in the sun and outdoors for many hours) or sprinkling vinegar or vodka on the “less scented” parts of shirts or sweaters.

It is certainly not a goliardic competition. Stylist Stella McCartney made waves when she explained that “basically, the rule of thumb in life is: if you absolutely don’t have to clean something, don’t clean it. I wouldn’t change my bra every day or throw stuff in the washing machine just because it was I’m incredibly hygienic myself, but I’m not a fan of dry cleaning or any other kind of cleaning.”

Environment, maybe even fashion, but that’s not all. There are also those who argue that limiting showers or shampoos is good for the skin. Hence the ‘no wash’, ‘no shower’, ‘low poo’, ‘no poo’ approaches. Any examples? Piero Pelù who recently said he washed his hair for a long time no more than once a year.
