Disability without wallet – CorrieredelMezzogiorno.it

from Toni Nocchetti

C’ a game we played as children that was very amusing and in some ways intriguing: If you were…. If I were a horse, if I were a footballer, if I were a car and so on. I have often thought about this game that I used to share as a kid with my friends about what I would do today if I were a minister in the Italian government. With all due respect to the current and future ministers in office and with great nostalgia for the laughter that animated my childhood game, I will try to be more precise. If I were a minister, more precisely if I were the minister of disability, I would be dressed in rags because my government has deprived me of economic resources (it is said in political language without wallets). If I were the Minister of Disability I would always carry with me a geographical map of Italy highlighting in red all those regions (very easy, just draw a line below Rome) in which welfare for the disabled sees allocating resources up to 10 times lower than those of the central-northern regions.

SIf I were the Minister of Disability, I would show a bank check whose header reads that the banking foundations of the north reserve resources for projects for disabled people in their territories up to 90% more than in the south. If I were the minister of disability, I would go around with a book under my arm to remember that in the Italian school that welcomes over 320,000 pupils with disabilities, many school principals and many, if not all, curricular teachers should compulsorily study to regain useful skills for inclusion processes.

If I were the minister of disability, I would carry with me folders full of papers with all the bills that have remained white paper that have been talking about what we are after for 20 years, caregivers, work, architectural barriers, etc. etc. If I were the Minister for Disability I would wear a sign bearing the inscription: Lea and Lep for everyone and not for someone luckier. Surely by now many of my childhood playmates would have told me that so it was all too easy to guess who I was. I wonder why this is always so difficult for adults. But I’m not the minister of disability anyway.
