280 people left the party from different parts of Kuttanad in one month. Emergency area committee meeting tomorrow in the presence of Minister Saji Cherian.

Alappuzha: Division in Kuttanad CPM is severe. All the members of Pulingun local committee have submitted their resignations. Local committee secretary and area committee member are among those who have submitted their resignations. 280 people from different parts of Kuttanad have left the party in a month. The area committee will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow in the presence of Minister Saji Cherian.
Meanwhile, there was a fierce fight and dispute in the CPM district secretariat in Alappuzha over the action against A Shanawas, who is accused of drug trafficking. The action was limited to suspension when a section strongly opposed the district secretary’s proposal to expel Shanawaz from the party. The opinion of district secretary R Nasser was that A Shanawaz, who had brought insult to the party among the people, should be expelled. But a group of leaders rejected the proposal.
Their argument was that in the present situation only measures to save the face of the party are sufficient. Minister Saji Cherian’s PS Manu C Pulikal, H Salam MLA, G. Rajamma, KH Babujan, G. Venugopal A. Mahindran stood with Shanavas. The proposal to remove the Chairman of the City Council Welfare Committee was also not accepted. Due to this, the action against Shanawaz was suspended. In the meantime, some CPM activists approached the Enforcement Directorate demanding that Shanawaz’s illegal acquisition of property be investigated. The demand is to investigate illegal acquisition of property and financial transactions. The district secretary R Nasar himself informed about this in the area committee meeting held yesterday to report the decision of the district secretariat.
