There is a lot of hue and cry over Anubhav Sinha’s web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’. The makers were facing heavy opposition for showing the Hindu names of the terrorists in the show. There was a demand to ban the OTT platform on which it was released, i.e. Netflix. Meanwhile, the latest update is that the disclaimer of this show will be changed. After a meeting in the ministry, Netflix has issued a statement that the Hindu names of the terrorists are actually their code names and now the real names of the hijackers will also be added to the disclaimer along with ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’.

It is known that a controversy has arisen on social media regarding the characters and code names of the hijackers in the show ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’. After the incident of 1999, the terrorists were identified as Pakistani Muslims, who had given themselves Hindu code names.

‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’ are the code names of terrorists!

Let us tell you that ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’ are their codenames. This is also mentioned in the statement of the Home Ministry in the year 2000. However, critics believe that the makers should have made this clear in the web series. Now, Netflix has revealed that they will add a disclaimer with the real names of the terrorists in the show.

Statement issued by Netflix

In an official statement, Netflix’s content head Monica Shergill said, “The disclaimer has been updated for viewers unaware of the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999, including the real names and code names of the hijackers. The code names in the series reflect the names used during the actual incident. India has a rich culture of storytelling and we are committed to showcasing these stories and their authentic representation.” Amid the backlash and ongoing controversy, Netflix has also promised that in future the content on their platform will also be reviewed under national sentiments.

Five kidnappers identified

After the kidnapping incident in 1999, the five kidnappers were identified as Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Saeed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Mistry and Shakir, who were members of a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation. However, soon after the web series was released on August 29, netizens objected to the Hindu code names given to the characters of the kidnappers.

The flight was hijacked on 24 December 1999

The 6-episode hijack-drama also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Arvind Swami, Patralekhaa, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa and Dia Mirza. It is based on the incident of 24 December 1999, when Indian Airlines flight IC 814 from Kathmandu to Delhi was hijacked after it entered Indian airspace after taking off from Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal.
