“Discomfort among children is growing: more developmental psychologists are needed”

“Today more than ever, we need psychologists who work with small children: psychodynamic training on the developmental age is essential”

The Jungian analyst explains it Magda Di Renzo, head of the Therapies service of the Institute of Orthophonology (IdO) and director of Four-year course of specialization in psychodynamic psychotherapy of the developmental age of the MITE Foundation. Registrations are open for the new formative year, which will start in January 2022, with the aim of training psychologists of the developmental age, figures who “beyond the strictly therapeutic and rehabilitative field, can also work with very young children and this is very much needed, the scope is wide”Adds Magda Di Renzo.

“The presence of the developmental psychologist is fundamental in schools of all levels both as a support for educational reflection and as a listening to the discomforts of children, which can be revealed right inside the school. In our school we attach great importance to these aspects and already at the time of the internship, the students can follow the work being done in the various fields “.

For those who want to work with children “psychodynamic training is essential – Di Renzo continues – because the child is the set of all the components including, primary, the psycho-affective and bodily affective one through which all the fundamental messages from the outside pass. The psychodynamic approach is not only necessary to work with very young children, but because these areas deeply affect everyone’s course of development. So – stresses the psychotherapist – if we are unable to have a wide angle view, which allows us to understand what is the psycho-affective condition of the child, we cannot understand if its deficiencies belong only to a disturbance or are also a consequence of environmental deficiencies “.

During the 4 years of training, the students of the course in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy of the developmental age will follow a path of personal analysis lasting 100 hours distributed over the first two years, 200 hours of experiential workshops and 600 of internship; 1,000 hours of theoretical teaching. Then there is the clinical training that starts already in the first two years with the ‘Clinical consultation seminars’, during which an expert psychotherapist will begin to discuss the main issues of the management of clinical cases that will then develop in the work of group supervision of the second two-year period (50 hours in the third year and 50 hours in the fourth year). Seminars and conferences with Italian and international guests are also planned every year. The developmental stages of the child, the psychodynamic theories, the symbolic dimension and therefore the understanding of a language that is not only conceptual but also imaginal, are just some of the many themes that will be explored over the course of the four years.

At the end of the four-year period the students, in addition to becoming psychotherapists, will also have obtained three licenses for the professional use of the Wartegg Psychodiagnostic Test, the Emotional Contagion Test (TCE) and the Autogenic Training for adolescents. The latter considered “a fundamental tool”.
