In non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD for short), more fat is stored in the liver cells. In Germany, about 30 out of 100 people are ill. In people with type 2 diabetes, the frequency of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is significantly higher at over 70%.

Unfavorable combination

People with type 2 diabetes and a fatty liver have an increased risk of the disease progressing: fatty liver inflammation, connective tissue remodeling of the liver with possible liver failure or liver cancer can develop. The risk of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease or diabetic nerve disease is also increased. Liver health is therefore particularly important.

Inflammation of the liver caused by NAFLD is currently not treated with medication, but only with lifestyle changes with the aim of weight loss. However, studies provide evidence that drugs that are already used effectively in type 2 diabetes could also have a beneficial effect on fatty liver disease.

Researchers are currently investigating whether treatment with these drugs can lead to a regression of the inflammation and at the same time prevent the disease from progressing. In the future, this treatment could not only support the blood sugar control of diabetes, but also help prevent NAFLD and other diabetes-related complications from progressing or even regressing.
