Actually, there is no effective cure for flu. Ginseng could perhaps close this gap. A US study ascribes healing and preventive powers to the herbal remedy.

Korean red ginseng extracts could help in the future Flu to fight and prevent infections. As reported by “The Epoch Times”, among others, researchers from the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University in Atlanta, in collaboration with scientists from a South Korean research institute, have discovered that the natural product ginseng has a positive effect on the immune system. The researchers working with Sang-Moo Kang published their results in the journal Nutrients.

Enhanced immune response to influenza infection

Experiments with mice, for example, showed that animals infected with influenza virus A showed various improvements in the immune response. The prerequisite is that the rodents have been regularly orally supplied with the extract of red ginseng over a long period of time. The researchers found that the mice increasingly produced certain proteins that are an important part of the immune response. They also found a small number of inflammatory cells in the bronchial walls.

However, positive effects of ginseng were not only found in the treatment of strain A flu viruses, but also in the prevention of infections. According to the scientists’ assumptions, these also result from the improved immune defense after taking the ginseng extract. It also increases the chances of survival of lung epithelial cells infected with the flu virus.

Does ginseng also help against RSV?

But ginseng could prove to be effective not only against flu. The plant substance could also have a preventive effect in the event of an infection with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which can lead to severe disease progression, especially in small children. Ginseng is thought to stop the virus from replicating and multiplying in the body. Results of this further study appear in the journal “International Journal of Molecular Medicine”.

Kang tested ginseng on mice not only for flu infections, but also for RSV infections. Here, too, positive effects could be determined, which primarily relate to an improved and strengthened immune system.
