Archaeologist Discovers Oldest Built Grave Monuments in Nordic Region

An archaeologist at Norrbotten’s museum, Frida Palmbo, reveals that the recent discovery of ancient red ochre graves has given her nightmares. The burial site, believed to be approximately 7,000 years old, consists of five red okra graves and is considered one of the oldest known built grave monuments in the Nordic region.

Frida Palmbo expressed her astonishment, stating, “In the past, there have only been three known red okra graves in the county, so we didn’t know that such graves could be so close together.”

The find was located on private forest land in Överkalix municipality. While the forest felling had received the necessary permits from the County Administrative Board, it took place in close proximity to a known ancient site.

Palmbo explained, “Last summer, we received a tip about potential archaeological significance in the area. When we arrived at the site, we discovered red fields and traces of a forest machine. The driver has not committed any crime, but it was disheartening that they did not react to the red sand that appeared from the ground. It is concerning that permission can be granted to prepare land relatively close to known ancient remains.”

The ancient burial condition, where the dead are covered with red ochre – an iron-containing sand, dates back to the Stone Age. This discovery sheds light on the ancient burial practices and traditions of the Nordic region.

The Norrbotten’s museum plans to conduct further research and excavation at the site to gather more information about the ancient civilization that utilized these red okra graves. This groundbreaking discovery has the potential to rewrite the history of the region and provide new insights into ancient burial customs.

The local community and archaeology enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting more details and findings from this remarkable archaeological site. In the meantime, efforts must be made to preserve and protect this unique heritage to prevent any further destruction or loss of historical artifacts.
