As part of ongoing efforts to support cooperation between Libya and international organizations to promote sustainable development in the areas of environment and local administration, the Ministry of Local Government of the Government of National Unity held a meeting with both the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
The ministry’s official page on Facebook stated that “the meeting discussed a number of joint initiatives to support and develop the capabilities of Libyan municipalities in the fields of environmental management and urban planning.”
The Ministry added in a statement, “Several important steps were agreed upon aimed at enhancing the technical and administrative skills of trainees from municipalities. The importance of handing out certificates to 75 trainees who participated in the first phase of the training study was noted, in appreciation of their efforts and contributions to developing practical and theoretical skills in management.” Waste, as trainees were trained to use the Wact application, which aims to calculate waste components.”
She added, “The discussions also addressed the policies of laws related to waste management, as the legal framework in Libya was compared to the policies applied in the countries of Egypt and Tunisia, which reflects the importance of improving environmental laws to meet local and international challenges.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, “it was agreed to organize a field visit during the first quarter of 2025, with the host country to be determined at a later time, with a proposal to study Morocco’s experience in waste management to benefit from the effective solutions it has provided.”
