Disney and TikTok have announced a partnership allowing creators to use Disney’s intellectual property in short-form videos, with content appearing on both platforms. The deal, set to launch in the U.S. soon, marks a significant shift in how entertainment companies engage with social media.
Disney and TikTok have forged a partnership that will let creators use characters and scenes from Disney’s vast library—including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars—in short-form videos. The content will appear on both TikTok and Disney+’s Verts platform, a vertical video feed designed to attract younger audiences. The collaboration, described as first-of-its-kind,
aims to bridge fan creativity with Disney’s storytelling, offering creators access to memorable scenes and moments from Disney movies and shows
while boosting Disney+ engagement.
A Bridge Between Fan Creativity and Studio Storytelling
The deal centers on a curated selection of user-generated content, with creators opting in to share videos featuring Disney IP. Asad Ayaz, Disney’s chief marketing and brand officer, emphasized that the best storytellers are fans first,
highlighting the mutual goal of extending the life of films and shows through fan conversations. Dawn Yang, TikTok’s global head of entertainment, added that the partnership brings the authentic creator expression of the TikTok community to Disney+,
leveraging the platform’s 200 million U.S. users to deepen engagement with Disney’s content.
Disney’s Verts platform, currently available only in the U.S., will host a thoughtfully curated
selection of TikTok videos, refreshed regularly to keep audiences engaged in timely fan discussions. The companies also announced a joint Disney Creator Ambassador Program,
offering top creators rewards, visibility, and career development opportunities. This initiative reflects Disney’s effort to cultivate relationships with digital creators, a key demographic for its streaming strategy.
Expansion Plans and Strategic Implications
The partnership will initially launch in the U.S., with plans to expand to other markets with the intention of other markets to follow.
While financial terms remain undisclosed, the deal underscores Disney’s push to adapt to shifting viewer habits, particularly the rise of vertical video. Peacock, HBO Max, and Netflix have all rolled out similar vertical content features, recognizing that mobile users prefer short, snackable videos over traditional formats.

The collaboration also comes on the heels of Disney’s recent financial success, including a 10% revenue increase in its parks and experiences segment, driven by a 4% rise in theme park visits. However, the deal’s broader implications remain unclear. Critics question whether it will significantly boost Disney+’s 130 million global subscribers or if it will merely serve as a strategic move to counter rival platforms. The success of the Verts platform, which has yet to prove its long-term appeal, will be a key factor in determining the partnership’s impact.
A New Era for IP Licensing and Creator Engagement
Disney’s decision to sanction third-party use of its IP represents a departure from its historically strict approach to copyright. The company previously faced backlash over a scrapped partnership with OpenAI, which allowed AI-generated videos using Disney characters. That deal collapsed in March after concerns over violent and racist content produced by the Sora tool. By contrast, the TikTok partnership emphasizes human-created content, aligning with Disney’s focus on fan-driven storytelling.

The move also highlights the growing influence of social media in shaping entertainment consumption. By integrating TikTok videos into Disney+, the company aims to capitalize on this trend, creating a shared Disney experience
that blurs the lines between fan content and official releases.
As the partnership unfolds, one unresolved question remains: how will Disney balance its creative control with the organic nature of user-generated content? The success of the Verts platform and the effectiveness of the Creator Ambassador Program will determine whether this collaboration becomes a blueprint for future industry partnerships—or a cautionary tale of overreach.
