Released on Wednesday 6, Disney’s second-quarter balance sheet revealed that, between April and June, the entertainment giant recorded a loss of US$ 460 million (almost R$ 2.5 billion).

With a series of remakes of classic films and title sequences with a leftist bias — such as The Little Mermaid e Indiana Jones —, Disney has not achieved the expressive box office as expected, at the same time that the subscriber numbers of the streaming Disney+ have been decreasing – there were almost 12 million less from the first to the second quarter of this year.

After the earnings release, company chairman Bob Iger said that “despite the short-term headwinds,” he has “incredible confidence in Disney’s long-term trajectory.”

Thus, Iger announced some measures, in an attempt to reverse the millionaire loss. According to him, one of them is to raise the price of subscriptions to the streaming in the United States, with an impact around the world, and charge higher fees for sharing screens, as Netflix did recently.

Disney’s loss may be linked to the left turn

Since last year, Disney has been openly defending leftist agendas. One of the heiresses of the empire, Abigail Disneygranddaughter of co-founder Roy O. Disney, Walt’s brother, supported the company’s turnaround.

“Corporations seeking to occupy ‘neutral ground’, including Disney, would do well to admit that there is no such thing anymore,” argued Abigail, in an article critical of “conservative people”.

According to the businesswoman, the only option for companies to survive is to maintain authenticity, generosity, joy and decency. “These things are kryptonite for the right-wing agenda,” she said.
