Disney surprised with the announcement of “Moana 2”, a sequel to its 2016 hit, which was developed in secret. The film was revealed with the release of a new photo, teaser and release date for this year: November 27th in the United States.

For now, there is not much information about the production, which will once again star the daughter of the head of the Motonui community in Polynesia. However, the character’s look reflects the passage of time, showing the girl as a young teenager. The first official image also confirms the return of the ape Maui to the plot. In the first film, Moana and Maui were voiced, respectively, by Auli’i Cravalho, in her first Hollywood work, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

So far, only the name of the director has been confirmed: David G. Derrick Jr., who debuts in the role after participating in the animation team for the first film and Disney’s latest releases, including “The Lion King” (2019), “Raya and the Last Dragon” (2021), “Encanto” (2021) and “Strange World” (2023).

In addition to this animation, Disney is also developing a live-action version of the first film, which will again feature The Rock in the role of Maui, but a new actress as Moana, as Auli’i has become an adult woman since 2016. This version has a script by the author of the original animation, Jared Bush, in partnership with Dana Ledoux Miller (“Designated Survivor”), and directed by Thomas Kail, director of the Broadway show “Hamilton”. The live-action remake is scheduled to premiere in 2026.
