Fri, 12:47·Web·IscThe streaming landscape has developed rapidly in recent years. Given the constantly growing number of services and an almost endless range of films, series and documentaries, sharing accounts in order to save costs has become attractive for many users. With Disney+, another provider is now restricting the sharing of accounts, after Netflix introduced an additional fee for sharing accounts outside of one’s own household last year.

Disney+ relies on stricter rules
The popular streaming provider plans to restrict sharing of accounts from June 2024. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that from this point forward, companies will be asking users who share their passwords to checkout. This regulation will initially be introduced in selected countries before being expanded to all subscribers in September.

Netflix as a pioneer
Netflix was the first major streaming service to take action against account sharing. In 2023, the company introduced an additional fee for adding another person outside of your household. According to the company, this measure led to an increase in the number of subscribers, which apparently prompted other providers to follow Netflix’s example.

Other providers could follow
Although Disney+ and Netflix are the most prominent examples, it is likely that other streaming services will make similar moves. Account sharing means a significant loss of potential revenue for providers. By introducing account sharing fees, they hope to solve this problem and increase their revenue.

Consequences for users
For users, this means that they have to be prepared for additional costs if they want to continue sharing their accounts. Although Disney+ has not yet published exact details about the costs of the new sharing option, it can be assumed that these will be in a similar range to Netflix (4.99 euros per month per additional member). Subscribers therefore have the choice to bear the additional costs or forego sharing their account.

While some users are critical of these measures, providers see them as essential for their long-term economic success. It remains to be seen how users will react to these changes and whether other providers will follow suit. The measures have already paid off for Netflix: Despite numerous cancellations, the number of new registrations reached a peak after account sharing ended.
