Chennai:
To celebrate the Pongal festival, 1 kg of sweet rice, 1 kg of sugar, full length sugarcane along with Rs.1000 cash is being given to each family card holder by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
After the Prime Minister launched the Pongal package distribution program on the 9th, they distributed it in all ration shops across Tamil Nadu.
Pongal package is given to 200 to 300 people daily in each ration shop to enable people to shop without crowding.
As the Pongal package was announced to be available for 4 days from 9th to 12th, most people bought it. 25 percent were distributed on the first day.
Officials of the cooperative department said that 82 percent of the 2 crore family card holders have been distributed Pongal package with Rs.1000 cash till yesterday.
That means 1 crore 70 lakh people have received the package till yesterday evening. The Pongal package delivery will end this evening.
People in urban and rural areas including Chennai have started traveling to their hometowns after receiving Pongal packages.
Pongal package will be given tomorrow (Friday) to those who have gone abroad and those who missed it. They are allowed to buy from ration shops till tomorrow evening.
Will it be delivered after Pongal? Will it finish tomorrow? There is a possibility that the government will publish a notification about it.
It is noteworthy that the Pongal package has been given to everyone this time without any mess. The public said that the tamarind included in the package was of good quality and the full length sugarcane provided was good.
