Diversity and Inclusion in Audio Productions
The second day of the 12th Film and Product Market of the International Cinema Institute (AIC) was marked by a lively debate on diversity and inclusion in audio productions. Moderated by professor Fernando Timba, the discussion featured academic director Indiara Anrere from Quanta Escola and Supervisor of Investments and Strategic Partnerships Marcelo Rocha from Spcine.
During the debate, Indiara emphasized the importance of humanizing characters and narratives in cinema. He argued that when representing diverse identities, creators must go beyond simply depicting physical characteristics and delve deeper into the human experience. Educational institutions, he believes, have a crucial role in training professionals who can develop inclusive stories.
Marcelo echoed Indiara’s sentiment, highlighting that diversity extends beyond just storytelling. He argued that it is also a financial interest to embrace diverse voices and perspectives. He emphasized the need to create opportunities for under-represented creators and ensure that the benefits of diversity reach both large and small production companies.
Indiara proposed a practical exercise called the “sky test” to encourage participants to identify and challenge their own biases. He argued that fostering a diverse and inclusive environment is not just about hiring diverse talent, but also about providing mentorship, guidance, and support.
The debate also touched on the responsible use of technology and artificial intelligence in audio visualization. Both speakers emphasized the importance of considering diversity when programming algorithms and ensuring that these technologies are used in a responsible manner.
The 12th Film and Market Week continues until August 9th, promoting important conversations about the future of cinema and the vital role of Brazilian audio in shaping the industry.
