Divided Opinions: Tilos Mayor Reflects on Emotional Arrival of 106 Refugees Amid Controversial Encounter

by time news
A post on Facebook describing an incident she had with a woman at the port of Tilos regarding the arrival of 106 migrants rescued by the coast guard was made by the mayor of the remote island, Maria Kamma.

In her post, the mayor of Tilos speaks of “two sides of the coin” during the arrival of the 106 rescued individuals.

On one hand, according to Mrs. Kamma, “men, crying and holding many of their small children in their arms, thanking the coast guards and trying to kiss their hands…” and on the other hand, a lady who was fishing with her husband and who asked, according to the mayor of Tilos, “to throw them into the sea.”

In the end, when the woman tried to film the mayor of Tilos, Mrs. Kamma told her, “madam, this island is not for you.

This evening, those of us who were at the port of Tilos faced both sides of the coin… One hundred and six (106) refugees, among them many children, were safely brought to our island. The scenes I personally witnessed shattered me…
Men, crying and holding many of their small children in their arms, thanking the coast guards and trying to kiss their hands…

The coast guard officers with great care lifting children and the injured and taking them down from the ship. Police officers, medical and nursing staff were present as well as residents of the island offering dry clothes, bread, shoes, and whatever else they could quickly bring… Unfortunately, many small children and infants…

And suddenly a “lady” who was fishing at the port with her companion, apparently “spoiled” her vacation (😉 this noise! She starts shouting where are you taking them, why are you collecting them? Thinking that I was misunderstanding the process of the coast guard registering the refugees, I responded that, madam, this is how it works, the coast guard leads them to the port authority to be registered. But no!

“Throw them into the sea” That was the wish of the “lady”! And she starts giving me lessons! About how we must keep our country and our lands Greek, how we are Christians and “they” have no place here! To get rid of them, throw them into the sea where they are bringing them to our islands, referring to the coast guard officers who transported 106 human souls, that was their crime! That’s what made the woman angry, folks! She was watching the coast guard officers helping the children to disembark from the boat and she got angry because they did not speak Greek and were not Christian kids!!! We were thanking them and she nearly insulted them!

And she had the audacity to want to film me because I dared to tell her how unfair she is. Who do you think you are? I told her who I am, now you tell me your name, I answered her, she gave me a name, I don’t know if it’s real, but I truly told her and will repeat it:

Madam, this island is not for you!
