In China, a woman and her three accomplices who committed marriage fraud, including introducing prostitutes to their married husbands in order to extort a large amount of bride price, were sentenced to prison.

According to foreign media such as Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) and Hsinchu Daily on the 26th, the Longli County Court in southwestern China’s Guizhou Province sentenced four people, including Mr. Xiong, Mr. Li, Mr. Zhou, and Mr. Song, who were indicted on fraud charges earlier this month to up to 3 years and 10 years. Sentenced to three months in prison.

According to reports, earlier this year, Ms. Xiong and her boyfriend Mr. Li, who were in debt, met two men with the surnames Zhou and Song online, respectively. Mr. Zhou and Mr. Song offered to meet offline, saying that they would help Mr. Xiong and Mr. Li obtain a loan, and then met them in person to get them to participate in the marriage fraud.

Their plan was to take advantage of one of the Chinese marriage customs: bride price. In the area where they live, they take advantage of the fact that the groom’s side usually offers a bride price of 100,000 yuan (about 20 million won) or more, so they get married, collect the bride price, and then make the husband visit a prostitute, citing this as the reason for divorce. The explanation is that the bride price will not be returned.

China’s ‘chairi’ (彩禮, dowry) is money or valuables that the groom must pay to the bride’s family before marriage, and is one of China’s long-standing marriage customs.

According to the SCMP explanation, if the groom has sex with a prostitute or engages in sexual activity after paying the bride price, he will be arrested, and the wife can file for divorce and does not have to return the bride price.

Xiong, who decided to participate in their marriage fraud, met a man named Bao at a local matchmaking agency and got married in Jiangsu Province. At that time, Bao gave Xiong 136,666 yuan (about 27.5 million won) as bride price and also provided money and valuables worth 48,000 yuan (about 9.7 million won).

A week after the wedding, Xiong and Bao, who returned to Longli County, Guizhou Province, had dinner with Li, who was pretending to be Xiong’s cousin. At this time, Xiong left so that her husband Bao could talk alone with Li.

When Xiong left, Li tried to take Bao to a prostitute by taking advantage of Xiong’s refusal to sleep with him, but their scam failed when Bao reported Li to the police.

In response to this case, the Longli County Court in Guizhou Province sentenced four women, including Ms. Xiong, Mr. Li, Mr. Zhou, and Ms. Song, who were accused of fraud to imprisonment, each receiving between 20,000 yuan (approximately 4 million won) and up to 30,000 yuan (approximately 4 million won). He was ordered to pay damages of approximately 6 million won.

A man who worked at the matchmaking company that Mr. Xiong visited was also arrested on fraud charges after it was confirmed that he had introduced Bao to Mr. Xiong and manipulated Mr. Xiong’s personal information.
