The Diwaniyah Agriculture Directorate confirmed, today, Sunday, the cultivation of more than 51 thousand dunums of the barley crop, distributed among 6 districts and sub-districts in the governorate, noting that it was fully irrigated..

Director of Diwaniyah Agriculture, Ahmed Al-Ziyadi, told the (INA): The plan includes planting the barley crop on more than 51 thousand dunums distributed among 6 districts and sub-districts of Shalabiya after securing the required water share in cooperation with the Water Resources Directorate in the governorate and it was fully irrigated.“.

He stressed that “during the past two seasons, the governorate planted only 5,000 dunums of barley crop due to water scarcity, and this year the governorate reached 33%, and all other requirements for agriculture were provided, including chemical fertilizers and pesticides, to combat barley jungles.”“.

For his part, the Director of Water Resources, Musafir Dakhil, indicated to the (INA), that “the process of irrigating the areas planted with the barley crop began on the first of June, and water releases were secured for the agricultural plan for this crop gradually, and the entire designated area was irrigated and the sprinkler system was relied upon, starting from the first of last July and in coordination with the neighboring governorates covered by the cultivation of barley.”“.

Dakhil referred to “implementing campaigns in cooperation with the security services to remove all violations of water quotas, as well as cooperation with the Diwaniyah Electricity Distribution Department, with regard to providing electricity to agricultural pumps within the plan to distribute the barley crop.”“.

Meanwhile, the head of the Union of Farmers’ Associations in Diwaniyah, Khaled Abdul Karim, confirmed to the (INA), “We appreciate the decision of the Council of Ministers to increase the prices of the barley crop (amber) from 950 to one million dinars per ton.”“.

Abdul Karim added, “This support will improve the reality of the agricultural sector and achieve a significant increase in the production of strategic crops, especially barley, and reduce the suffering of thousands of agricultural families, as the Diwaniyah Governorate depends primarily on agriculture, as well as increasing the geographical area allocated to the barley crop for the current season and securing the required water share, which gives many economic returns.”“.
