After being down a set, Novak Djokovic got better and better against Alexei Popyrin.
Before today’s third round match at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic and Alexei Popyrin had met twice on tour so far, with the Serbian coming out on top against the Australian both times.
The start of the match was balanced with fine service games from both players. After Popyrin held his serve several times in the sixth game, he took advantage of a short break point from Djokovic in his opponent’s next service game and took the break to win the first round.
By the start of the second act, the 37-year-old Djokovic, who was back at the start with a gray knee brace on his right leg, found more confidence and more in his game. After his early break, he almost had the upper hand at the double break when the score was 4:1, but he was still able to level the set firmly.
With the momentum behind him, the 24-time Grand Slam champion took the first game of the third round and was able to take the serve from his 24-year-old opponent. The set continued without breaking any further chances. In the final service game, Popyrin fought back to win two points after a 40-0 victory for the Serbian, but the Davis Cup winner removed all doubts about the start of the set with an ace.
Even in the fifth round, both players showed no weakness in serving. With the score at 5:5, Djokovic had three break chances, but Popyrin was able to counter with five points in a row. The decision was therefore made in the tiebreak, in which the world number one for a long time was able to hold on to the lead and seal success 4:6, 6:3, 6:4, 7:6 (3) with service. winner after just over three hours.
The world number 2 will meet in the round of 16. the 15th-ranked Dane Holger Rune, who was able to prevail after a tough fight against the French qualifier Quentin Halys with 1:6, 6:7 ( 4), 6:4, 7:6 (4), 6:1.
